On Netflix Now: ‘Moon’
Moon is a 2009 science fiction film about a worker on the Moon who has a strange encounter toward the end of his three-year stint that changes everything about why he is there alone and what he is doing.
With Sam Rockwell‘s recent win at the Oscars, it’s a good time to give his back catalog a look and really, there’s hardly a better film to start with than this challenging and uniquely entertaining bit of cinematic awesomeness from Duncan Jones. Rockwell plays a worker on the Moon, alone and isolated, his only companion a tethered robot-esque machine called GERTY (voiced by Kevin Spacey), mining an element on the surface that has essentially saved Earth from a devastating energy crisis. Problem is, one day, he begins to suffer weird hallucinations and while investigating what seems like failed equipment, stumbles upon an unbelievable find. What does it mean? How did happen? And more so, what should he do now about it? Rockwell gives a powerfully emotional performance, being just about the only person on screen for the duration, and the story takes you to some unexpected places.
