On Netflix Now: ‘Seoul Station’

Seoul Station is a 2016 animated horror film about several groups of people who try to survive a zombie pandemic that unleashes itself in downtown Seoul.

Did you see the South Korean zombie film Train to Busan? If you did, good for you. If not, what are you waiting for? It’s one of the most innovate films in the genre to come along in ages. Well, here’s an animated film from the same director, Sang-ho Yeon, that serves as a prequel to his runaway live action hit. The story follows Suk-gyu (voiced by Ryu Seung-ryong), a father searching for his missing daughter Hye-Sun (Shim Eun-kyung), finding her in Seoul, forced to be a prostitute. Just as he’s about reunite with her, a sudden and unexplained zombie outbreak spreads across the city. Now it becomes a race for the two find each other and survive as the crush of infected sweep through the population. Surprisingly deep and mature, this is as much a drama as it is a solid horror film, with great animation and a terrific story. You don’t need to have watched Train to Busan to follow this, but in you haven’t and plan to, put this under your belt first.

THE LAST WORD

Outstanding animation and a great story make this a step above most. It’s much more than just a bunch of zombies crushing through the streets.

Not much. If you’re not in for reading subtitles, sure, this might be a drag, but don’t let that stop you. This is thrilling stuff.
