On Netflix Now: ‘Take Me’

TAKE ME IS A 2017 CRIME, COMEDY ABOUT A CURIOUS CHARACTER WHO SPECIALIZES IN SIMULATED KIDNAPPING, BUT GETS MORE THAN HE CAN HANDLE WHEN HIS LATEST CLIENT IS NOT WHAT SHE CLAIMS TO BE.

Movies a bit let of center might be an acquired taste for those who find themselves leaning toward the traditional in their escapism, but it’s good to venture away from your comfort zone once in awhile and there’s probably no better team to put your trust in with such an endeavor than Mark and Jay Duplass, who are wizards when it comes to quirky, jarring dark comedic experiences. Take Me is exactly that, a film starring Pat Healy as Ray, a man with a plan, or so he thinks. He kidnaps willing clients who are looking for a shakeup in their routines, providing authentic-feeling situations that give people new perspectives on life. When he’s hired to kidnap Anna St. Blair (Taylor Schilling), a woman with some odd requests in her kidnapping, he finds himself suddenly on the ropes and playing a whole new game … of survival. This is an intense can or worms that left many unsure how to take it, but truly, this is subtle brilliance that yes, won’t be for everyone, but if you let it sink its hooks in, has plenty or rewards. THE LAST WORD

Superbly written and acted, with some over-the-top performances, this is a very funny and biting dark comedy with a few well-earned twists.

It’s a leap of faith for sure, and if you aren’t sold on the comedy style in the first ten minutes, you’re not going to buy the premise much after that. Decidedly off beat.
