On Netflix Now: We’re Watching ‘Dave Chappelle: Equanimity’

Dave Chappelle: Equanimity is a one hour stand comedy special from the legendary comic, filmed in Washington, D.C.

For fans of Dave Chappelle, his return to the stage recently has been much celebrated, and this last series for Netflix is arguably the best he’s ever done, the stories and commentary the work of a man so in control of his craft, it’s more than a comedy show, it’s a master at the top of his game. While this is really part one of a two part-show, with the second act called The Bird Revelation filmed in Hollywood in a much smaller venue, the first is better, Chappelle tackling some personal issues in an absolutely unapologetic set that sees him address a number of issues from all across the social skyline. His delivery is so refined and controlled its almost jarring, building to a truly astonishing finish that brings the house down with a genuinely moving tribute and declaration that could only be made right by Chappelle himself. This is great entertainment but it’s also so much more.

THE LAST WORD

Chappelle delivers easily one of the best sets of his career, in a timely, deeply personal and honest examination of his career and our current political climate.

Chappelle is uncompromising and in your face, so if you’re not a fan of his style, this won’t change your mind, though to miss this performance would be the greater tragedy.
