Nobody Review

Nobody is a 2021 action flick that focuses on our typical mild-mannered father and husband who is being hunted down by an evil drug lord.

Calling all action fans: get ready for one of the most entertaining and action-packed movies that you will ever see in your life. Nobody is such a fun flick that moviegoers will have a blast watching on screen. Directed by Ilya Naishuller, best known for his crazy feature debut Hardcore Henry in first-person perspective, his latest film stars the amazingly talented Bob Odenkirk in the lead role with a cast that also includes Connie Nielsen, RZA, Christopher Lloyd and Michael Ironside. Nobody is written by Derek Kolstad, who is the creator of the John Wick franchise, so you know exactly what you’re getting into. If you have seen the trailer and thought it shows all the best parts of the entire movie, nope. Guaranteed you’ll have a great time from start to finish.

Odenkirk is our main protagonist Hutch Mansell who seems like your typical mild-mannered father and husband. Basically a nobody. When two burglars suddenly break into his house, he holds himself back from fighting in order to prevent further serious damage. His family is now disappointed in him, and they begin to drift apart. After that evening, he now unleashes his rage and goes on a dangerous path to save his family from an evil drug lord named Yulian Kuznetsov (Aleksey Serebryakov). Admittedly, it does sound unoriginal, and you feel like you have seen it plenty of times before. However, the filmmakers manage to keep it fresh by adding some new things along the way.

Obviously, you have to praise Odenkirk for being our likable anti-hero who also showcases some incredible combat skills. He is fantastic. He will always be recognized for playing Saul Goodman in both Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, but hopefully Nobody will redefine his acting career as an action star as well. It would have been better for the screenwriter to explore more of his backstory, because it’s actually quite intriguing. Maybe we’ll see more in a sequel so fingers crossed. RZA and Lloyd are also great as the supporting characters. Unfortunately, the antagonist is very generic and underdeveloped. He’s undeniably intimidating when he’s on screen, but you don’t really care that much about him as a villain.

As an action flick, it’s a ton of fun. Whenever Hutch is throwing down against his enemies, it’s insanely entertaining. The filmmakers don’t hold anything back on the action sequences, and they’re extremely brutal and well-executed. There’s the argument that people will call Nobody a John Wick rip-off even if it’s written by the creator of the series, which is pretty understandable. The film is a little formulaic in terms of the premise, but don’t let it stop you from enjoying the movie. This is simply popcorn entertainment you’ll have a really good time watching.

Nobody promises two things, which are to deliver some brilliant action sequences and entertain the audience. If you have not been a fan of Odenkirk before, this will be sure to convert you. You’ll want to see it again.
