On Netflix Now: ‘Ace Ventura: Pet Detective’

Ace Ventura: Pet Detective is a 1994 comedy about a goofy detective specializing in animals who goes in search of the missing mascot of the Miami Dolphins.

Yup. This is what we’re doing. Times are crazy and things are all up in the air and sometimes we just need to take a moment and just fizzle out for a couple of hours. How better to do that with than with Jim Carrey in his early days when he would do absolutely anything to get a laugh. Enter this absurd outing from director Tom Shadyac, where Carrey gets nuts in his film debut, playing the titular Ace, a man with no filters and a love of animals. The story is pretty simple, with well, you know what? It’s not that important. What is, is how on target Carrey is throughout, delivering a masterpiece performance of maniacal genius that leaps over lines and is, quite honestly, much more layered that it appears. In fact, we wrote about it right here. Get this on your list tonight and just let the zaniness overtake you. You need a laugh.

THE LAST WORD

This is classic Jim Carrey, the movie that defined him for half his career and is still an outrageous comedic tour de force.

Many weren’t prepared for the lengths Carrey goes and if you were never won over by big bold physical comedy, this isn’t going to change a thing (but it should).
