On Netflix Now: ‘Adventures in Babysitting’

Adventures in Babysitting is a 1987 comedy about a babysitter who must battle her way through the big city after being stranded there with the kids she’s looking after.

Charming and light with some funny bits and a great performance from Shue make this well worth watching.

Hardly challenging and sometimes a little too off beat, for those not interested in looking back, this won’t be one to try.

Some movies are totally defined by the times they were released and Chris Columbus‘ debut effort Adventures in Babysitting is just that, a film that, because of a superior marketing campaign that saw it staturate television and print, had a lot of people talking. Starring Elizabeth Shue, who was three years out of her breakthrough role in The Karate Kid, it follows … well, her adventures as the babysitter of three kids, expecting an evening of TV and such, already disappointed by the date that stood her up. However, when a friend calls needing helping, she packs up the children and heads out into the night, not realizing that she’s in for a wild ride. While it’s hardly a masterpiece, it is loads of breezy fun with Shue easy to fall for. Rumors of a reboot have circulated for years, but so far nothing, so until then, hitch a ride on the nostalgia train and enjoy some 80s comedy bliss.
