On Netflix Now: ‘Eyes Wide Shut’

Eyes Wide Shut is a 1999 thriller about a man who takes a harrowing and dangerous night-long odyssey of sexual and moral discovery after his wife admits that she once almost cheated on him.

A project more than thirty years in the making and based on a French book from 1926, Stanley Kubrick‘s trippy Eyes Wide Shut is a curious and oddly unsettling experience that now almost twenty years later is still a fascinating journey any film fan ought to take. Starring Tom Cruise as Dr. Bill Harford, it follows his epic night into the shadows of New York City when he takes to the streets after learning of his wife’s sexual fantasy about another man. To call his discoveries disturbing would be an understatement as he ventures uninvited into a secret lair of sexual rituals with masked figures in a country estate. It only gets stranger, and more dangerous, from there. Kubrick’s masterful direction and visual cues lie subtly lingering upon every gorgeous frame of this mind-bending film. In the Guiness Book of World Records as the longest constant movie shoot, the project was three years in regular development and six days after it was shown privately to its stars, the director died. Pay attention to the remarkable score by Jocelyn Pook as well. This is a great cinematic experience.

THE LAST WORD

Kubrick doesn’t letdown cinephiles who crave a challenging experience with this lush, expertly-crafted masterpiece.

If you’re looking for pure escapism for the night, this is not it.
