On Netflix Now: ‘Heat’

Heat is a 1995 crime drama about a group of professional bank robbers who start to feel the heat from police when they unknowingly leave a clue at their latest heist, while both sides attempt to find balance between their personal and professional lives.

Outstanding action and a brilliantly layered story of crime and cops, this is an edge-of-your-seat thriller you won’t want to miss.

Not much. It’s loaded with tension and if that is an issue, be wary.

There really is only one film in modern cinema that truly has come to define the heist genre, the one all others have been influenced by and owe even the small debt to, and that’s Michael Mann‘s Heat. Starring Robert De NiroAl PacinoVal Kilmer and a host of others, the film centers on a group of expert criminals and the cops close on their tail. It also details the personal lives of these people and the struggles it takes to keep separate their professional lives versus anything else. In doing this, the movie parallels the paths of the two leads, one a cop and one a thief, plotting their obsessions to be the best at what they do. Moody, dark and explosive, Mann’s direction is fast-paced and yet deeply engaging, bringing us along on a very dark journey. With an outstanding score by a variety of artists and some of the best performances of any in the cast (look for a young Natalie Portman), this is simply the greatest heist movie ever made. Don’t miss it. Read more here.
