On Netflix Now: ‘Sunshine Cleaning’

Sunshine Cleaning is a 2008 comedy/drama about a mom, who in order to raise the tuition to send her young son to private school starts an unusual business with her unreliable sister.

A great script and plenty of chemistry make this an unconventional comedy with great heart that is a surefire winner.

So, no, it doesn’t make much sense and is probably even less believable if you think too much, so if you let that sort of thing get in the way, this will surely be a pass.

Talk about great casting, the women of director Christine Jeffs‘ unusual Sunshine Cleaning hit this right over the fence in this touching comedy that is both weirdly absurd and a little inspiring. Amy Adams is Rose Lorkowski, a single mom struggling to make ends meet as a maid, trying to raise her troublesome 8-year-old son Oscar (Jason Spevack) who needs medication or a special school. Needing help, her ex-boyfriend Mac (Steve Zahn) has an idea: crime scene cleanup. Makes sense. She enlists the help of Norah (Emily Blunt), her seemingly dead-end sister who still lives with their father, and the two begin a new adventure that suddenly changes not just their lives but so many others. With two very impressive and star-making turns for Adams and Blunt, this is a charming and surprisingly effective little tale that will knock you in the heart. Don’t hesitate.
