On Netflix Now: ‘The Flintstones’

The Flintstones is a 1994 live-action feature of the cartoon show where Fred Flintstone finally gets the job he’s always wanted, but it may just come at a price.

Amazing sets and very cool effects bring the animated classic to life, making this a great looking movie with a few solid laughs.

It’s kinda shallow and fans of the beloved cartoon will have plenty to gripe about, with some missed opportunities.

So no, this movie is not so great story-wise and never sort of captures the essence of the cartoon it is based on, and yet, it is still so darned fun to watch. Director Brian Levant‘s film is part send up, part innuendo and part nonsense but all silly and as such, given how hard the cast works to make these iconic character click, loads of fun even if it has its flaws. John Goodman stars as Fred Flintstone with his pal Barney (Rick Moranis) at his side while wives Wilma (Elizabeth Perkins) and Betty (Rosie O’Donnell) suffer along. Filled with a bunch of celebrity cameos, the movie is pretty creative with its astonishing set design and production with all sorts of practical effects to give it a lived-in charm. Goofy and aimless, it’s a light and breezy evening of fun that makes for an easy recommendation.
