Pieces of a Woman is a 2020 drama that revolves around a woman who’s coping with a personal tragedy after a home birth.
Pieces of a Woman is most certainly a film that will not be for everybody. It has a very thought-provoking premise, and it’s not an easy watch whatsoever. Directed by Kornél Mundruczó and written by Kata Wéber, it stars Vanessa Kirby in the lead role, which will probably be recognized as the best performance that she has ever given in her entire acting career. After having its World Premiere at the Venice International Film Festival and being released in select theaters last year, it’s now available for everyone to watch on Netflix. It’s definitely one of the most emotional and tragic films that you will ever see.
Taking place in the city of Massachusetts, Kirby plays Martha Weiss whose life is forever changed after going into labor. She has been looking forward to having her first baby and being a mother. Unfortunately, her home birth has gone through complications, which results in a devastating tragedy that she’s now forced to cope with. As the movie goes on, we also see her clashing with some people in her life after what has happened to her. It’s a touching portrayal of grief that will be sure to resonate with you on both a deeply emotional and personal level.
Kirby gives an absolutely fantastic performance from start to finish, and you’re pretty certain that she’ll be nominated for an Oscar. She’s undeniably a talented actress, but this will unquestionably be known as her most memorable role. You really do feel for her, and you understand the struggle that her character is going through. Her relationship with some of the supporting characters is also quite compelling. Wéber’s screenplay makes sure to fully flesh out Martha and give her lots of development. It must have been difficult for Kirby to take on this challenge, especially given the subject matter.
The director does a great job making the film feel grounded in its realism. The storytelling is really strong, and it’s basically a character-driven story that deals with some heavy themes. As mentioned before, this is not an easy watch. Some scenes in particular will make you speechless. However, Mundruczó makes sure to treat this premise with respect. Without spoiling anything, the opening act has one of the most unforgettable one-take sequences that you will see on screen. Benjamin Loeb’s work as the cinematography is incredible, which makes you want to praise his amazing camerawork. Martha’s personal journey is beautifully showcased through impressive and gripping camera movements. At times, it does feel like it loses a little bit of momentum during the second half, but the emotional core is still there.
Pieces of a Woman is a poignant piece of cinema. It’s a very sad drama filled with anxiety, trauma and pain. The pacing might be an issue for some people, but it’s not a flaw that will compromise the rest of the film. With the help of stunning cinematography, brilliant direction, and a remarkable performance by Vanessa Kirby, it’s quite terrific.
