Psycho Goreman Review

Psycho Goreman is a 2020 horror-comedy about two siblings who come across a vicious galactic monster.

Have you ever seen a movie so over-the-top and absurd that it’s kind of hard to describe what it’s about? Do you love watching genre flicks at midnight screenings? Do you love features that will for sure be developed as cult classics? If you have said yes to all of these questions, get ready for Psycho Goreman! Written and directed by Steven Kostanski, who is best known for his other awesome indie titles such as Manborg and The Void, he has returned to showcase his fun style of filmmaking that genre fans will once again really enjoy! Disclaimer: Don’t take the kids to see this film! It’s not for them.

The premise sounds completely crazy, but it totally works. Two siblings named Mimi (Nita-Josee Hanna) and Luke (Owen Myre) come across a galactic monster who has been imprisoned on Earth after being defeated by a group of entities called the Templars. The kids nickname him “Psycho Goreman” (or PG for short), and they make him do some childish shenanigans that a vicious creature wouldn’t normally do, especially for someone who’s built on death and destruction. You even get to learn more about his backstory, which is actually pretty cool to see. As the movie goes on, things get a lot weirder, and that’s pretty much the basic gist of Psycho Goreman.

The two lead actors work well with one another, even if Mimi tends to be annoying at times. Their personalities are admittedly cliched sometimes, but that’s not really a bad thing. However, it’s the titular character PG who steals the show. You do not want to mess with him otherwise he’ll rip your head off. He has a very menacing presence, while still being incredibly hilarious with some lines that will crack you up. He’s the one you’ll remember the most compared to the rest of the characters.

From start to finish, it’s insanely enjoyable to watch. The makeup, costume design and practical effects are all great. You can tell this is a passion project from the director, which is pretty admirable to see. It’s always cool to see the care and hard work from the crew shown in front of the camera. They don’t hold anything back on all the ludicrous stuff happening on screen, so know what you’re getting into. It doesn’t make any sense at times, but you’re not supposed to take a premise about a killer galactic monster so seriously.

Psycho Goreman is a ridiculously entertaining horror-comedy, and it’s another worthy addition to Kostanski’s filmography. It’s certainly not for everybody, but it absolutely lives up to its insane title. As an exciting tribute to movies released during the 80s and 90s, it’s surprisingly nice to see that again. It’s simply a really fun and goofy genre flick, and that’s all you can ask for. It’s a blast!
