The Ten Best Horror Movies of the Decade

The Perfection, 2019 © Capstone Film Group
There were a lot of great horror movies that came out in the last ten years and trying to list the best ones is quite the task.  Keep in mind that this is just my opinion and should not have any merit on your own list.

10 Climax(2019)

Gaspar Noe‘s latest movie is a descent into hell. I know a lot of critics like to use that word when describing a horror movie, but this is literally the case. A group of dancers unwillingly consume LSD while at a late night practice and we get to watch them all devolve from functioning human beings to mutated animals. Read our full review.

9  Raw (2016)

After a young vegetarian eats meat for the first time during a hazing ritual at her new college. She will start to develop a hunger for other things that have been kept repressed for a while. Julia Ducournau‘s debut feature is both beautiful and horrific. It has some truly imaginative imagery mixed with content that had many looking away. Brilliant acting from everyone in the cast and the main theme may be one of the best scores for horror movies in awhile.

8 The Perfection (2018)

We all know the usual tropes when watching a movie especially in the horror genre. So it’s very refreshing to have an original story come out in the field. Alison Williams plays a former musical prodigy who had to leave her career to take care of her mom. She returns to seek out the new talent played by Logan Browning. The Perfection messes with your perception of where you think the story is heading. This one surprises at at several moments. 7 Tragedy Girls(2017)

Two high school students (Brianna Hildebrand and Alexandra Sharp) begin murdering people and blaming it all on the serial killer they just captured. All to help generate traffic to their true crime blog.  A very fun and fresh new take in the slasher genre with great chemistry from it’s two lead stars. Listen to our full review.

6 It Follows(2014)

David Robert Mitchell‘s debut feature is an incredible story about a horror that we all try to run away from but can not stop, and that’s the notion of death. The concept of an unknown force who stalks you after having sex seems very much like our fear of becoming older and eventually dying. All the characters in this are quite young and the act of sex is their gateway to adulthood. The violent entity stalking them is their reminder that death is waiting for them. They can try and avoid it for as long as they can but the end is inevitable and that is down right scary.

5 Tucker and Dale Vs Evil (2010)

Two best friends (Alan Tudyk and Tyler Labine) are on their way to spend time fixing up their cabin.  When a group of kids confuse them for being redneck slashers and begin dying on their property. This was a lot of fun because the movie plays with your expectations very well. In once scene Dale begins laughing because he is told by Tucker that it makes people more comfortable. Cut to the kids’ reaction who are just horrified of this big person randomly laughing. That’s the humor and horror at work.

4  You’re Next (2011)

When a group of assailants wearing animal masks begin killing members of a family. It will be up to the girlfriend of one to help put an end to their bloodshed. It’s always great to see a woman fight back in a horror picture and Sharni Vinson is just awesome in this. Playing like a combo of The Strangers meets Home Alone, You’re Next has a really good story and moments that will surprise you.

3 The Babadook (2014)

Jennifer Kent‘s debut feature follows a woman (Essie Davis) and her son (Noah WIseman), who begins having horrific images after reading a rather ghastly fable. This original horror movie can be seen as just a mother and son fighting a supernatural force, but I also feel that it’s about how to deal with any inner turmoil as well. Davis’ character went through some trauma with the death of her husband and the appearance of this entity is a reminder of such fears. There are a lot of ways to describe the themes of this and that is why it’s one of the best.

2 Hereditary (2018)

Hands down one of the most scariest movies of the decade. This movie will have you feeling very uneasy from the very start and it only gets worse. Toni Collette is mesmerizing in the lead role and the remainder cast is fantastic as well. The movie does a great job at setting up things you think are going to happen in the story and than just totally subvert and change them.

1 Cabin in the Woods (2011)

If you are a horror fan and have not seen this movie by now.  I would have to question your love of the genre because this feature from Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon is such a fun take not just on the people who make scary films but the audience who enjoys watching them. Even after you are aware of the story’s twists. It’s still fun to go back and watch and rewatch it because of the way they incorporate so many sub genres of  horror movies. I can’t recommend this movie enough.
