We Talk With Molly Moriarty of ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’

Molly Moriarty, one of the youngest stars of THOR : LOVE AND THUNDER (now showing in theaters, coming to Disney+ September 8), tells us that it was a blast getting to play a brave “Asgardian kid who isn’t scared to fight the baddies”.

Wow. Is there any other way to describe THOR : GOD LOVE AND THUNDER!?

No, I don’t think so. THOR: Love and Thunder is a brilliant way to sum up this awesome film. It’s fun, full of all kinds of love and has lots of THOR action and Thunder. Working on this amazing project was literally a dream come true. I LOVED every second of it and now being able to watch the finished product has made it even more epic.

It’s a real mix of genres, isn’t it? Lots of comedy!

Yes there are lots of funny moments in this movie, but there are also some scary ones as well. My favourite scene that I filmed was my bedroom scene when the shadow monsters dragged me out the window. I knew it had to be a scary scene but it was super fun to film. I didn’t know what the end result was going to look like but when I saw it, I was really happy as it was pretty scary seeing myself being dragged away.

How would you sum up your character in the film?

I think my character is very brave, especially for such a little girl. Being taken out of bed by monsters in the middle of the night is pretty scary but she tried to fight free with her bunny. She was brave when Gorr locked her and the other kids up in the cage and she was brave again when Thor gave her and her Bunny some of his power to fight the shadow monsters. She is a brave Asgardian kid who isn’t scared to fight the  baddies.

Was that the appeal for you?

Yes definitely. Being brave and standing up to the baddies is important no matter how old you are or where you come from.

How did Marvel approach you?

I was invited to audition for this project through a Casting Director who I’d worked with before. It was just before the pandemic hit so after the 1st audition, everything stopped and we didn’t hear anything for ages. I actually forgot about it and then one day months later, my mum and I were on a road trip and my Agent called saying Marvel wanted me to send in a quick recording. So we pulled over on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere to make a quick video. It was pretty funny actually. Then after several more months I was in New Zealand filming a Netflix series when Marvel got in touch again and it all started to come together.

Was it shot during the pandemic?

Yes it was but it was all done very safely and everyone had to get regular Covid tests and wear masks all the time. Covid wasn’t as bad in Sydney compared to other parts of the world at the time so we all felt safe and no body I know got sick.

Tell us about working with Chris Hemsworth?

It was great. He is really really tall compared to me so he looked like a giant but he was great to watch in action. Seeing him prepare for a scene was amazing as it made me realise how hard you have to work to be as good as him.

You can finally talk about the role. Is that exciting in itself?

Absolutely! It felt like forever ago when I first auditioned and was told this was a secret project and couldn’t tell anyone about it. Now I can finally tell my friends and family. When the movie came out, I hadn’t told anyone I was in it so when I got back to school, lots of kids and teachers were surprised to see me in the movie as no one was expecting it.
